What is an IFSC code and how is it structured?
An IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The first 4 alphabetic characters represent the bank (e.g. SBIN for SBI), the 5th character is always 0 (reserved for future use), and the last 6 characters represent the specific bank branch.
What is the difference between an IFSC code and a MICR code?
An IFSC code is used for electronic funds transfer (NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS). A MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) code is a 9-digit numeric code printed at the bottom of cheque leaves used for physical cheque clearing.
Is an IFSC code required for UPI transfers?
For VPA/UPI ID transfers (e.g. username@upi or mobile numbers), an IFSC code is not required. However, for direct Account Number + IFSC transfers, a valid IFSC code is mandatory.
