+200
1.20x
- Calculate absolute difference: 1200 - 1000 = 200
- Divide difference by |Original Value|: 200 ÷ |1000| = 0.2
- Multiply by 100: 0.2 × 100 = 20%
- Result indicates a 20% increase.
How Percentage Change Works
Learn the mathematics of relative growth, price inflation, stock depreciation, and the asymmetry between percentage increases and decreases.
1. Understanding Percentage Change
Percentage change quantifies the relative degree of growth or decline between an initial starting state (Original Value) and an updated state (New Value). Rather than reporting raw numbers alone, it normalizes the variance relative to the starting benchmark.
2. The Core Mathematical Formula
Percentage Change = ((New Value - Original Value) ÷ |Original Value|) × 100
Where: Original Value ≠ 0. Difference = New Value - Original Value.
When New Value > Original Value. Difference is positive.
₹1,000 → ₹1,200 = +20.00% Increase
When New Value < Original Value. Difference is negative.
₹1,000 → ₹800 = -20.00% Decrease
3. The Fundamental Asymmetry of Growth vs Decline
A widespread financial misconception is assuming that equal percentage increases and decreases cancel each other out. They do not:
- If an equity stock worth ₹100 drops by 50%, it falls to ₹50.
- To recover back to ₹100 from ₹50, the stock must gain +100% (not 50%).
- Similarly, if an asset gains 20% (₹100 → ₹120) and then drops by 20%, it lands at ₹96, ending with a net 4% loss.
- Original Value of Zero: Moving from ₹0 to ₹500 represents an infinite or mathematically undefined percentage growth because division by zero has no solution.
- Negative Baselines: When calculating percentage change on negative balances (such as debt or corporate net losses), absolute values |Original| must be used in the denominator to preserve directional sign correctness.
