Progressive slab pricing means units are billed at increasing rates as consumption tiers increase. For example, if you consume 250 units, the first 100 units might be billed at ₹5/unit, and the remaining 150 units at ₹8/unit, rather than all 250 units being billed at the higher rate.

How Progressive Slab Billing Works
State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) bill residential electricity using telescopic progressive tiers:
Total Bill = Energy Charges + Fixed Charges + FPPCA + Duty
Where:
• Telescopic Slabs: Units within lower brackets are billed at lower rates (e.g. 0–100 units at ₹3.50, 101–300 at ₹6.50, 301+ at ₹9.00). Consuming 250 units does not re-price initial units!
• Fixed / Demand Charges: Levied flat per kW of sanctioned load per month.
• FPPCA (Fuel Surcharge): Variable fuel and power purchase cost adjustment per unit.
• Electricity Duty: State government tax percentage (e.g., Maharashtra 16%, Gujarat 15%).

Major State Discom Schemes: Free Units & Subsidies
Several Indian state governments offer specialized domestic electricity welfare schemes: Delhi provides 100% subsidy (zero bill) for consumption up to 200 units and 50% subsidy up to 400 units; Karnataka (Gruha Jyothi) offers up to 200 free units based on average historical consumption; and Tamil Nadu (TANGEDCO) provides the first 100 units free of cost for all domestic connections.
