UPI QR Safety & Verification Guide

How Does a UPI QR Code Work?

Under the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) unified UPI specifications, a payment QR code encodes a standardized URI starting with upi://pay. This URI contains parameters such as the payee Virtual Payment Address (pa), payee name (pn), requested amount (am), and remarks (tn).

Always Verify Recipient Details

When a payer scans this QR code in Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, their app will display the verified bank account holder name fetched directly from the NPCI Central UPI Switch. Payers should always verify that the displayed name matches your business or personal name before authorizing the payment with their UPI PIN.

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

When the amount field is left empty, the QR code functions as a Static Merchant Standee, allowing customers to enter any bill amount. When a specific amount is configured, it acts as a Dynamic Invoice QR, ensuring exact settlement without over- or under-payments.

Never Share UPI PIN to Receive Money

Crucial Safety Rule: Scanning a QR code is only used to send money. You NEVER need to enter your 4-digit or 6-digit UPI PIN to receive funds. If any buyer asks you to scan a QR or enter your PIN to receive cash, it is an attempted fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UPI QR Code and how does it work in India?

A UPI QR code encodes a standard NPCI payment string (upi://pay) containing the payee Virtual Payment Address (VPA), payee name, currency (INR), and optional fixed amount. When scanned by any UPI app like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, it auto-fills the payment details securely.

Can I set a fixed payment amount in the QR code?

Yes. If you enter an optional amount, the scanning user will see the amount locked in their payment app. If left blank, the payer can enter any custom payment amount.

Are my UPI ID or bank details stored on India Utility Hub?

No. Generation is 100% client-side in your web browser using pure math algorithms. No UPI IDs, names, or transaction amounts are transmitted to or stored on any server.

Is this UPI QR code valid for all Indian banks and apps?

Yes. It strictly conforms to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) unified UPI linking specifications and works across all 400+ Indian banks and registered PSP applications.

NPCI Unified Payments Interface (UPI) QR Code Specifications

Technical standards, deep-link URI syntax, zero merchant discount rate (MDR), and client-side privacy architecture.

NPCI UPI URI Deep-Link Syntax

All standard UPI apps in India (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Cred) parse payment QR codes using the standardized NPCI URI scheme:

upi://pay?pa=VPA&pn=NAME&am=AMOUNT&cu=INR&tn=NOTE

Where:
• pa (Payee Address): Virtual Payment Address (e.g. mobile@upi, merchant@okaxis)
• pn (Payee Name): Verified account holder or merchant business name
• am (Amount): Transaction amount in INR (optional; if omitted, customer types amount)
• cu (Currency): Always INR
• tn (Transaction Note): Invoice number or payment reference memo

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) vs Merchant (P2M) QR

Understanding transaction limits and zero fee rules across Indian payment channels:

Zero MDR Mandate: Under Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, the Government of India mandates 0% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on standard UPI transactions. Merchants keep 100% of received funds with zero gateway commissions.

Per-Day Limits: Standard P2P UPI transfers have an NPCI ceiling of ₹1,00,000 per day (extended to ₹2,00,000 for capital markets and insurance, and ₹5,00,000 for hospitals and educational institutions).

100% Client-Side Privacy: Why No Data Leaves Your Browser

Unlike online payment gateway widgets that route customer data through third-party servers, our UPI QR Generator operates 100% in-browser using pure client-side SVG encoding. Your VPA, banking identifier, payee name, and bill amounts are never transmitted across the network, never logged in databases, and never sold to marketing trackers.

Scan & Pay Compatibility: QRs rendered here are 100% compliant with all Reserve Bank of India interoperability standards, allowing scanning from any Indian banking or fintech application.
